NEW YORKERS AND THE ARTS By Maximillien de Lafayette and Arlette Lagrange

THE MAGNIFICENT ONES

Captain Reid Stowe and Suzanna Bowling.

What makes New York the jewel of world's cosmopolitan cities is the unusual talents of its artists, the colorful characters cruising its socialite landscape, and the magnificence of the delightful madness of its geniuses. But basically, the character and unsurpassed creativity of some unusual New Yorkers add an ultra dimension to the magic of New York City. This week, we encountered talents, artists and entrepreneurs of the fifth kind. A kind of people which transcends unorthodoxy and redefines le risque and human magnetism. And this is what counts when we talk about those who bring refreshing breeze and excitement to our lives. People like captain Reid Stowe, Suzanna Bowling, entrepreneurs extraordinaire, adventurers/explorers par excellence and accomplished artists. Suzanna is a well-known Broadway's musicals star, who fortunately or  unfortunately abandoned the glitzy world of Broadway and its cabaret to join captain Stowe crew for the 1000 Days Voyage on his Schooner Anne. This woman is a national treasure.

Reid Stowe on deck A feature written about the Explorers Club of New York by Conde Nast Traveler describes Reid as being the  "genuine article, with an old-fashioned spirit of adventure" and "a man with that rare combination of unbridled passion and impetuosity." Nicholas Sullivan, president of the Explorer's Club, adds that "By virtue of his Voyage of 1000 Days, Reid will be one of the greatest explorers ever." The captain is an astonishing renaissance man, a Shaman, an artist, a philosopher, a writer, a musician, a story teller, a healer and one of those who could positively influence your life. Jan Lynn Sokota and Rick Prol are making the big buzz in New York. Rick is an international figure and a dominant force of the known universe  of art. He is a world class artist and a pioneer of New York's art of the eighties. His intelligence, bursting creativity and charisma are intoxicating. Rick is waging a war against curators and art wheeler-dealers who are trying to reshape the map of New York's artists and talents according to their own agenda. His most recent magnificent endeavor was the emergence of "EAST VILLAGE ASU (And Some Uthers) with curator Jan Lynn Sokota. Rick and Jan Lynn launched a quasi rival exhibit  at their B-Side Gallery on East Sixth Street in a direct response to what they see as an "uneven art exhibition" by Dan Cameron.

Metamorphosis VIII, The Wheel by artiste extraordinaire, Rick Prol.

Sokota told the media "Dan Cameron made a list and unfortunately that list was incomplete,  East Village USA will be the documentation of history and that documentation is inaccurate.”  Sokota stated that EAST VILLAGE ASU more accurately captures the spirit of the era. And we do believe that Sokota's statement is quite accurate. Their superb show organized within the spirit and style of the eighties, gathered some of the best artworks of the era. The small but impressive gallery space at Avenue B brought to life some 73 pieces by 35 well-known artists, illustrious names  from the era, as well as new emerging talents. As long as New York has people like Rick and Jan Lynn, the arts and artists in NYC could and would hope for a better future and a meaningful recognition by peers and the public. Two thumbs up for Rick Prol and Jan Lynn Sokota!

Cynthia Karalla, Andres Serrano and friends.

Cynthia Karalla is taking New York by storm. Her show at JEN BEKMAN GALLERY, 6 Spring Street, NYC, 212 219 0166 has become the center of attention of NYC art community. There is one "particular" painting by Karalla which is creating heated debates and uncontrollable controversy, perhaps furor, perhaps new school of art. Check it out! You will not be disappointed!
