WORLD'S LEARNING, CULTURE AND CIVILIZATIONS By Maximillien de Lafayette

AMERICANS VERSUS FOREIGNERS:

What foreigners like and dislike most about America?!

-Closing schools and establishments and sending home government employees, each time it snows or gets very hot. To foreigner, this is absurd. In many foreign countries, when it snows or gets very cold almost all the time, like in Russia, Finland, Scandinavia, snows and cold weather are not a major inconvenience. In foreign countries where hot weather is part of the living folklore, shops, institutions and governments keep up running their business as usual.

-Expensive auto repair bills on European cars.

-Many American women who were the “ensemble” of very tight blue jeans and jogging shoes. To foreigners, nothing is more “far from elegance” than wearing jogging shoes in public. What they dislike most, is when women who are working in offices and government buildings bring to work, in their bags and purses,  “those shoes”, later to wear them when they get out.

-The one-night-stand.

-Very few Americans speak foreign languages. They dislike that. More so, when they meet American foreign service senior officials abroad who totally ignore their language. This is why, sometimes, when American tourists visiting a foreign country, stop a native in the street to ask for direction, they get the wrong one, on purpose!!

-Schedule C appointees in the federal government.

-The president of the United States allowing members of the media and TV REPORTERS TO ASK HIM ALL KINDS OF QUESTIONS, during a foreign dignitary or head of state visit to The White House.

-American women being picked up in a fish market.

-American married men who answer “In Search Of” ads.

-American married men cruising supermarkets between 10:00 AM and 4:30 PM.

-Best looking American men in cosmopolitan cities are gay.

-Faceless/opinion-less American politicians and directors of federal agencies.

-American lawyers “retainer” fees. Other forms and agreements on and about lawyers fees payments are considered. “Retainer” is not customary in many foreign countries

-American lawyers who advertise on TV and promise you to “get you all what you deserve under the law” and falsely pretend “ you don’t pay us a thing until you get your money”. The truth is, that very few Americans know that lawyers in almost 99.99% of foreign countries are forbidden by law and by virtue of the ethical code of the bar association, to publicly advertise. Lawyers abroad do not advertise. It is considered unethical and even illegal.

-New York’s taxis.

-Abbreviations and shortenings of name and sentences. For instance, greeting a bishop “Hey Bish!” or asking your sister to wait for you becomes “One sec, siss!”. They don’t like it. Particularly the Arabs and the Latinos. I can understand that. Particularly,  when  lovely Latin gentlemen  have very long names such as Jorge Emanuel Fernando de Cordoba de Malaga de La Cruz  de La After Tomorrow”. Look who is talking? MOI ? With a name as long as mine; Maximillien de La Croix de Lafayette, son of Charles Louis Philippes Bernard de La…de La…de La… !!!, any way. I understand what they are talking about, even though, I was born confused with an ugly face.

-How could possibly, the budget of the wealthiest nation on earth (USA) be in deficit ? They become to worry about the Dollars they bought or foreign currencies they have recently exchanged or hid undress the mattress.

-American folks standing in lines on the sidewalk waiting to have a glimpse or a glance at famous people, royalties (Late Princess Di, for example) or movie stars!!

-Why Americans keep on watering the grass of their yard, only to cut it a few days later, and vice versa.

-TV weather people predictions: When in his or her forecast, the TV weatherperson or meteorologist predicts a “50 percent possibility of showers”. What drives foreigners crazy is when the weatherperson say “and the degree is 50 at the airport”. They are confused. They are mad. They scream: “For God’s sake, who lives at the airport?”. Boy, you have to admit, they are funny. They are mad too!

-The price tags on goods, merchandise and items in stores, supermarkets and particularly on big items like cars, such as :”$19.999” instead of $20.000. This drives them crazy!!
